Big Blue Trash Collection
Weekly Big Blue Trash Service is for regular, non-recyclable household trash such as food waste, diapers and pet waste, bagged leaves and grass clippings, and non-recyclable plastics or paper trash.
Set it out on time
- Know your collection day. Look at your current paper water bill, log into your account on okcutilities.com, or visit our My Trash Day page and enter your street address.
- Always set out your trash, recycling or bulky waste no later than 6 a.m. on your assigned collection day. You can set out regular trash and recycling the night before service. All trash and recycling carts must be brought back in no later than 8 p.m. the day after your service day.
- If a City holiday falls on your regular collection day, we will move collection to a designated make-up day.
Set it out right
- Bag all items put in your Big Blue trash cart and do not place any bags outside of carts. All trash must be contained in your Big Blue cart.
- Place items on the curbside, facing the streetfront. Do not place them in the street or on the sidewalk.
- Leave at least 3 feet of space between each cart so the boom claw has room to pick them up.
- Place carts and bulky waste items at least 5 feet away from obstacles, including mailboxes, gas meters, trees and shrubs, fire hydrants or parked cars.
- Do not put carts or bulky waste on top of water meters.
- Do not park in the street where trucks cannot access your trash or bulky items.
Help prevent trash fires
Do not put flammable materials such as pool chemicals, Lithium (Li-Ion) or (LiPo) batteries, gasoline, lighter fluid, propane tanks or other combustibles into your Big Blue trash cart. If you are throwing away used charcoal, soak it in a bucket for 24 hours, then bag it before putting into your Big Blue trash cart. Most chemicals and batteries can be dropped off at the City's Household Hazardous Waste facility.
Items we don't accept
Tires, explosive devices, Lithium (Li-Ion or Li-Po) batteries, car batteries, brakes and other auto parts, bricks, rocks, concrete or contractor construction materials. See our medications guidance on where to take back unused medications.
Was your trash missed?
Use the Service tab on okcutilities.com to report missed collection, or call Utilities Customer Service at (405) 297-2833. You must report it within two business days, or you may have to wait until the next collection cycle. Crews will return for missed trash or recycling within one business day.
Missing or broken cart?
Report it using our customer portal at okcutilities.com. Or, call Utilities Customer service at (405) 297-2833. Crews are usually able to make repairs or replace a cart within three business days. We do not replace carts unless one is missing or broken beyond repair. Cart repair generally includes on-site service for missing wheels, lids and handles. If you call for cart repair, make sure to leave your broken cart in a place visible from the street (not behind a fence or in the backyard) so crews can access it easily for repair.
Order an extra cart.
We get it. Two Big Blue carts may not be enough. If you find you need an extra cart (or two!) to handle your trash, use the Service tab at okcutilities.com to order one for a small monthly fee. Each customer household is allowed up to four Big Blue carts total - two that come with your monthly service and up to two extra. Do not use your Big Green recycling cart for regular trash.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size trash bags should I use?
Any heavy-duty bag 30-gallons or smaller is fine to use. Fill them to less than 75 pounds each.
I have excess yard waste. Can I set out bags alongside my Big Blue cart?
No. Make sure to bag all yard waste and leaves, and put all bags inside your Big Blue trash cart.
If you need an extra cart, you may order one for a small monthly fee. Use the Service tab at okcutilities.com to order one. Do NOT use your Big Green recycling cart for regular household trash.
My Big Blue stinks! Will you wash it for me?
The City does not provide cart cleaning service.
We recommend customers hose out their carts from time to time using medium pressure, or use a gentle, biodegradable detergent then rinse and dump excess water into your lawn and not the street, where chemicals could go down our stormwater system.
Commercial cart-cleaning services are also available locally.
I am moving. Should I take my carts with me?
No.Carts are assigned to each residential household and not people. If you move out, leave your carts at the residence you are moving out of. If you do not have carts at the new residence, use the Service tab at okcutilities.com or call Utilities Customer Service at (405) 297-2833 to order more.
Can I set out my own trash cart/can?
No. Our automated collection trucks are fit to handle carts the size and configuration of our Big Blue and Big Green carts. We cannot be held liable for damage caused to carts not owned by the City.
Can the contractor use my Big Blue cart for remodeling or landscape waste?
No. Big Blue carts, as well as the City's bulky waste program, are for the use by residential households. Some waste from DIY projects is fine, but contractor and construction waste must be removed by a private hauler or your contractor.
