Sewer Backups
Sewer backups are usually unexpected and always create a mess.
Sometimes the backup requires unpleasant cleanup and damages may occur. If this happens to your property, you’ll likely have questions.
Who fixes the problem?
That depends on whether the stoppage is in your private line or the City main. If it is in the City main, City crews will repair the main and restore service as quickly as possible. They will keep you informed about what’s being done.
If the problem is with the private sewer line connecting your house to the City main, crews will let you know. State law prohibits the Utilities Department from using ratepayer monies to make repairs on private property, therefore the responsibility of repairing or replacing private sewer lines is the responsibility of the home or property owner.
Who takes care of cleanup?
When the issue is caused by City infrastructure or City personnel, City crews will perform cleanup efforts to address public health issues as quickly as possible. Cleanup will consist of anything outdoors up to the exterior of a dwelling. City crews are prohibited from performing cleanup efforts inside of dwellings. Your insurance provider or property management company may be able to assist with this type of cleanup.
When the issue is caused by a private sewer line, the home or property owner is responsible for all cleanup.
Will the City reimburse me for the damage or cleanup if the backup is in the City main?
Only if the City had advance knowledge that the City system was at fault and didn’t fix the problem.
To learn about filing a claim against the City, the process begins with the Municipal Counselor's office.
Is this City policy or law?
This is law. Public funds cannot be spent for private purposes.
