Checking Your Credit

Upon starting or transferring service, the Oklahoma City Utilities Department uses the information provided to verify your identify, see if you qualify for a deposit waiver, and qualify for our reduced solid waste rate. We do this by pulling a "soft inquiry" through a credit reporting agency. Pulling a soft inquiry will not impact your credit score, and will only be visible to you if you sign into service with TransUnion. To learn more about process, read below.

Why are you running my credit?

One of our highest priorities is to maintain the protection of our customers’ identity. One way we do that is by following the Federal Trade Commission's "Furnisher Rule," which requires us to ensure the accuracy of information we furnish by validating the identity of our customers. This helps protect customers from others attempting to use their identity to start service and potentially creating bad debt, which could affect customers' credit scores. We report any bad debt to credit reporting agencies.

If we are unable to verify your identity and run a soft credit check, you will be assessed a security deposit at the maximum amount of $120 for residential accounts. This deposit will not be refunded or applied to your account until you end services with us. In addition, if we are not able to run a soft credit check, we will not be able to verify whether you may qualify for some of our customer assistance programs.

Which credit bureau will you run my credit through?

We are only contracted to run your credit through Transuion, so will only run it through that bureau. We will not make attempts to run it through Equifax or Experian.

Will there be any negative impact to my credit?

No. The Oklahoma City Utilities Department will only complete a "soft inquiry" on your credit report. This type of check is used only to inform us of your credit status. It will not impact your credit report or score.

I disagree with the results of my credit inquiry. What can I do?

To initiate a dispute, you will need to contact Transunion directly or use a third-party credit checking site to help. The Utilities is not authorized to handle disputes on your behalf. However, we can proceed with starting services with the results we received.

What do I do if my credit report is frozen?

If you have frozen your credit for identity-protection purposes, you will either need to unfreeze your credit with Transunion temporarily so we can run a report, or we can proceed with your service so long as you pay the $120 security deposit. If you opt to open service with a locked credit report, we will hold your $120 deposit until you end service with us.

I started service prior to Utilities starting Transunion checks. Can I still qualify for reduced solid waste services?

If you believe you are income-eligible for the lower solid waste services rate, please contact Utilities Customer Service by sending a message on our okcutilities.com customer portal, or call us at (405) 297-2833. Call Center hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. We will then send you an income affidavit form for you to fill out and submit back to us with a copy of your most recent Federal tax form so we may review it for eligibility.

How can I contact Transunion?

If you have questions about your credit, including freezing or unfreezing, or how to dispute your results, you can contact Transunion by calling 1-888-395-6938 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CST, or visit www.transuion.com.
