Bulky Waste

Almost any big junk or debris that won’t fit in your Big Blue trash cart can be collected as part of the City's monthly bulky waste program. Bulky waste collection is included as part of your regular trash and recycling services.

Our bulky program starts on the first Monday of every month and works off of a three-day window: Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday and Wednesday-Thursday-Friday). Crews have up to three days to collect items set at the curbside beginning with your assigned set-out day. Since crews could be at your house on any one of those days, it is important to set out your bulky trash by 6 a.m. on your assigned day. 

To report missed service, use log into your account at okcutilities.com and use the "Service" tab, or call (405) 297-2833 Ext. 3 to use our voice prompt system. A valid account identification number will be needed when you call. You must contact Utilities Customer Service within two business days after missed collection or you may have to wait until the next month's collection period.  

Bulky waste service does not change due to the holiday calendar.

Set-out Guidelines

DO:

  • Set out your bulky trash no later than 6 a.m. on your monthly pick-up date. Reminder: crews have up to three days to pick it up. 
  • Place items loose on the curbside where they can easily be picked up. Leave about 5 feet of space on all sides. 
  • Make sure your bulky pile is clear from obstacles. Do not set it under trees or power lines, or next to mailboxes, fences, gas meters and other obstacles.

DON'T:

  • Set out your bulky trash earlier than THREE DAYS prior to your assigned pick-up date. Setting it out early may result in a ticket or a fine.
  • Set out your bulky items after your assigned pick-up date or they may not be collected.
  • Set out bags full of trash or leaves along with your bulky waste. We do not collect bags as part of our bulky program.
  • Place your bulky waste in the street or your driveway. Make sure it does not cover your water meter or block storm drains.
  • Do not place bulky waste in an empty lot or on unoccupied property. This is considered illegal dumping and it will not be collected.

Excess Bulky Fees

The first four cubic yards (about the size of two standard refrigerators) are included in your monthly service fee. Customers who set out more than the allowed amount will be charged for each cubic yard that exceeds the minimum. If your pile is measured between four and ten cubic yards, we will tag the pile and excess fees will be applied to your next month's utility bill. If your pile is larger than 10 cubic yards, we will leave a tag on your door letting you know that your pile exeeds 10 cubic yards. The tag instructs you to call Utilities Customer Service and approve the charges. Visit our Service Rates & Fees page to see a schedule of Excess Bulky Fees. 

Was your bulky waste missed?

Use the "Service" tab on okcutilities.com to submit a service request, or call (405) 297-2833 and report the missed collection. You must call within two business days after the three-day collection period, or you may have to wait until the next collection cycle. It may take up to three business days for crews to return.

What we pick up:

  • Large and small household appliances. See "Items needing special handling" below for information on refrigerators, freezers and any item that contains freon. 
  • Furniture and carpets
  • Small trees and landscape waste from DIY projects. All tree limbs need to be cut to lengths of 10 feet or shorter. Large tree or landscape debris produced by contracted landscapers must be hauled off by the landscaper.
  • Fencing
  • Small waste produced by DIY home repair (no contractor waste)
  • Glass and mirrors (must be wrapped in cardboard and secured)

Items requiring special handling:

  • Refrigerators, freezers and items containing freon require special equipment for collection. Call Utilities Customer Service at (405) 297-2833 to schedule a pick-up during your regular bulky waste window. Per City ordinance [No. 49-25], doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers to be collected.
  • Mattresses: If you have a mattress that is infested with bed bugs or contains hazardous substances, please wrap it before placing at the curb. Use a plastic mattress bag (found online or at big box store for around $7) to ensure the mattress is secured. Please also adhere a sign or use spray paint to write the words "bed bugs" so crews are made aware. 
  • Basketball goals: Please call Utilities Customer Service at (405) 297-2833 to inform crews you have a basketball goal to be picked up. 

What we do not pick up:

  • Acids and caustics*
  • Antifreeze*
  • Automotive repair waste: Includes parts and/or liquid waste from automotive, boat or motorcycle repair, tires and rims, automobile frames, crankcase, transmissions, wheels and tires, brake fluid, degreasers and lubricants
  • Bagged landscape waste. All bagged leaves or landscape debris must go in your big blue bin. 
  • Batteries of any kind, including automotive batteries*
  • Bricks, concrete, rocks or similar materials from DIY home projects.
  • Contractor waste: Uncontained sheetrock, concrete, gypsum and roofing materials, remodeling and demolition debris, dirt, bricks, rocks or concrete. These should be carried of by your contractor.
  • Explosives
  • Diapers and pet waste
  • Excrement
  • Fertilizer*
  • Fuels of any types, including propane tanks*
  • Landscape waste: includes landscape waste and trees cut by a professional contractor. Special conditions will apply for special pick-ups as the result of severe weather.
  • Nuclear materials
  • Oils, including automotive oil, house repair lubricants and cooking oils*
  • Paints and solvents*
  • Pesticides*
  • Poisons* (Includes pest control, landscape and other poisonous materials)
  • Pool chemicals*
  • Rust remover*
  • Sewage and septic waste

*Items marked with an asterisk are accepted at the City's Household Hazardous Waste Center.
