Frequently Asked Questions

What is a watering variance?

A watering variance allows for daily watering watering for newly planted landscapes. It can also be used when an in‑ground irrigation system cannot follow the odd-even watering schedule (such as in large homeowner associations or sports complexes), or for other special circumstances.

How do I apply for a variance?

Fill out the correct form using the links above. If you have questions, email waterconservation@okc.gov.

Which watering variance do I need?

Use the newly installed landscape application if you are planting new sod or seed.

Use the existing irrigation system application if your system cannot follow odd-even watering schedules, you want to water two days per week, or you have another approved special circumstance.

Variances will not be approved for:

  • Personal inconvenience, such as mowing schedules or preferred watering days.
  • Irrigation controllers that are broken or cannot be set to match the required schedule.

What happens after I submit my variance application?

The conservation team has up to 15 days to review your request. Most requests are completed within one week. You will receive an email with your variance number. Please post this number where it can be seen for the entire time your variance is active. Variances cannot be backdated.

Where can I find more information?

You can find more information and specific limitations in the Watering Variance Program Resolution(PDF, 403KB).
