Storm Debris Collection

Info about August 2025 Heavy Rain Downburst Storm Collection

Utilities Crews have assessed areas in northwest OKC where local downbursts occured, leaving tree and limb damage in some neighborhoods. Damage was found in neighborhoods roughly south of Lake Hefner between MacArthur Blvd. and May Ave., and NW 10th Street and Wilshire Blvd.

What to Know
  • Separate storm debris like tree limbs or fencing from regular bulky waste such as carpeting, furniture or appliances. If your bulky waste pile includes both storm debris and regular bulky waste, you will be subject to excess bulky waste fees.
  • Cut tree limbs into sections of 10-feet or shorter.

  • Do not set any bulky items near mailboxes, gas meters, under trees, under overhead lines or near other obstructions.

  • Do not set bulky items on top of water meter tiles or block sidewalk access.

  • Do not set any bags out with your bulky waste. Bagged items are not part of the bulky waste collection program.

Commercial properties:
  • Commercial properties – including businesses, churches, schools, nonprofits and other organizations – are not eligible for curbside pickup by the City and are responsible for their own debris collection and disposal.

The Oklahoma City Utilities Department works with the City’s Office of Emergency Management to determine the type of response that may be needed after a severe weather event.

After roads and safety hazards are cleared, Utilities Field Quality Inspectors drive through storm-damaged areas to complete an assessment of the debris. This assessment may take several days depending upon the size of storm and the amount and type of debris left behind.

Once the assessment is complete, we will work to determine what our response will be then make an announcement to let our customers know what to expect.

For smaller storms, we will typically provide debris collection during our regular bulky waste collection schedule. For larger storms with above-average debris, we may bring in a private contractor to help with collection. For extremely large storms that cause significant damage, if an Emergency Disaster is declared by the State of Oklahoma, we will bring in specialty FEMA-certified crews to assist with debris management.

In each case, we will instruct customers as to when and how they can set out their debris. We will also post maps, where possible, showing where crews will be working so customers know when to expect collection in their area.

All announcements will be made through the City's Public Information Office and posted to this page as well as the City's relevant social media channels, including Facebook, Next Door, X, Instagram and Threads.
