Strong Neighborhoods Initiative
In 2010, City leadership recognized the need for a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to neighborhood revitalization. City leaders believed that struggling neighborhoods can be turned around with strategic interventions that support the physical revitalization of housing and infrastructure as well as the expansion of resident opportunities to improve quality of life.
At the direction of the City Council’s Neighborhood Conservation Committee, a new program framework, the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI), was developed that seeks to holistically improve neighborhoods through physical, social and economic investments that will tip neighborhoods toward self-sufficiency.
The SNI program has completed work in the following neighborhoods, Classen Ten Penn (2013-2018), Classen’s North Highland Parked (2013-2017), Culbertson's East Highland (2013-2020), and Capitol View (2018-2023). We will continue to track, share and celebrate their revitalization progress.

SNI is currently working with 3 neighborhoods, Capitol Hill (2018), Metro Park (2020), and Martin Luther King (2023). Staff is working with neighborhood residents, local stakeholders and city departments to develop and implement revitalization strategies for all three neighborhoods.
SNI Goals
SNI neighborhoods will soon see beautification projects, new homes under construction, existing homes being repaired, hazardous trees removed, new trees planted, afterschool programs and more – all in an organized effort to realize the following revitalization outcomes:
- Improved quality of life—From a place to “A Place”
- Engaged neighborhood groups, children & parents
- Decreased turnover in neighborhood & schools
- Improved property values & market stabilization
- Decreased perception of crime
- Reduction of vacant properties
- Greater connectivity to jobs, education & services
- Increased homeownership & private investment

Recent Workshops
One of the keys to the success of the SNI is openly engaging with the community and stakeholders. In this section, Staff will post SNI-related items such as recorded workshops, updates, or presentations that may be of interest.
