About the Oklahoma City Fire Department Explorer Program

The Explorer program is a youth program organized through the Boy Scouts of America Last Frontier Council. The program is designed to allow male and female youth between the ages of 14 and 20 to explore a career in the fire service. The explorers receive training similar to volunteer and professional firefighters including activities such as pulling hand lines, using ground ladders, learning CPR, conducting swift water rescue, rappelling, bunk out drills, ride-along opportunities at OKC fire stations, and seeing firsthand the day-to-day activities of firefighters. The training program is intense and demanding, but participants will gain an understanding of what it takes to pursue a career in the fire service.

The Oklahoma City Explorer Program has enrollment in December, but one can enroll or join at any time. The registration fee is $175 and can be prorated depending on when sign up takes place. A scholarship program is in place for those who may need assistance. The fee includes all application fees and a polo shirt.

Meeting Times and Benefits of Being a Fire Explorer

The Oklahoma City Explorers meet every other Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Oklahoma City Fire Department Training Center located at 850 N. Portland Ave. in Oklahoma City (73107).

  • Allows youth to gain insight and interest in becoming long-term members of emergency services.
  • Increases awareness among youth about volunteering and supporting the fire and emergency services.
  • Provides departments with additional help in accomplishing non-firefighting or non-emergency tasks.
  • Provides for leadership development for America's youth, who are tomorrow's leaders.
  • Educates parents and mentors on the importance of encouraging volunteerism.
  • Trains teenagers in firefighting and emergency services. Typical activities include practicing firefighting techniques, communication using hand-held radios, practicing first aid, maintaining firefighting gear and equipment, firefighting and team-building drills, and even responding to actual emergency calls.

How Do I Become a Fire Explorer?

  • Must be between 14-20 years old.
  • Must be willing to learn and be available to actively participate in various drills, fundraisers, and fire training.
  • Must contact an advisor and attend a meeting where an Explorer application will be completed.

What Else Do Explorers Do?

  • Attend drills twice a month and practice the skills learned.
  • Assist firefighters during emergency incidents.
  • Volunteer at special events.
