Mayor David Holt, Oklahoma City Councilmembers and Center operator Community Health Centers of Oklahoma celebrated the grand opening of the new MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Center at NE 36th Street and Lincoln Boulevard today.
Community Health Centers of Oklahoma will operate the Center, which will open to members on Dec. 8. For membership information, call (405) 427-3222 or visit wellnesschc.com.
“Community engagement is at the heart of this Wellness Center,” Ward 7 Councilwoman Nikki Nice said. “I look forward to watching the center flourish under Community Health Centers of Oklahoma’s leadership.”
The Center provides wellness and social connections for people ages 50 and up. The 44,810-square-foot building features a heated lap and therapy pool, large fitness center, gym, elevated indoor walking/jogging track, classroom space, recreational and sports activities, health clinic and more.
“Our organization is dedicated to overseeing this new facility and ensuring it becomes a thriving space for our city's seniors,” Community Health Centers CEO Isabella Lawson said. “This new wellness center will provide Oklahoma City seniors with affordable access to amenities and services they need to stay active, fit and healthy.”
Every aspect of the Wellness Center is designed to be easily accessible for older adults, including those with mobility challenges, and it was designed with seniors' needs in mind.
The Center hosts a multi-media artwork titled Seeds of Change. The physical installation and projected animation encourage visitors to explore and add to a digital library of community history in historically Black east Oklahoma City. Seeds of Change has been recognized as an Educational Resource by Langston University and the OKC Arts Commission. The project was funded by the City’s 1% for Arts Program and created by a local team led by Anton Morton with collaborators Nick Bayer, Eric Sourie, Keaton Towns and Pamela Zeljak.
“The MAPS senior wellness centers have proven to be life-changing, connecting Oklahoma City’s seniors to wellness, recreational and social opportunities,” Mayor Holt said. “The addition of this new wellness center in northeast Oklahoma City represents a significant MAPS 3 investment in our senior residents and our community as a whole.”
The Center was constructed by W.L. McNatt and designed by Hornbeek Blatt Architects.
MAPS 3 includes a fourth wellness center at 13660 S Western Ave., operated by the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, and is scheduled for completion in 2024. MAPS 4 includes $16.7 million to construct a fifth wellness center.
