Es una fiesta! The community is invited to celebrate the opening of a new outdoor multicultural plaza in historic Capitol Hill’s Calle Dos Cinco with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 24. The plaza is located on Harvey Avenue between SW 24th and SW 25th Streets, next to the historic Templo De Alabanza and surrounded by small businesses.
Inspired by the lively gathering places throughout Latin America, the plaza’s vibrant design reflects the neighborhood’s rich Hispanic heritage. It features colorful public art, Talavera tiles, an arched entryway, a gazebo stage, trees, decorative lighting, seating, removable bollards and other amenities designed for both celebration and everyday community use.
“The plaza is more than just a space, it’s a reflection of our culture, history and the warmth of our community,” Gloria Torres, executive director of the Capitol Hill Business District said. “Whether you grew up in south Oklahoma City, come from a Latin American country, or are visiting from across town, the plaza will welcome you with a true sense of belonging.”
The Capitol Hill Business Improvement District will manage the plaza. The $2 million project was funded through federal dollars allocated to the City’s Strong Neighborhoods Initiative.
“Our new Plaza on Calle Dos Cinco is a powerful reflection of Oklahoma City’s dynamic Latino community,” Mayor David Holt said. “It is important that all perspectives in our ‘One OKC’ find representation in our public spaces, and this new gathering place in Capitol Hill sits at the heart of OKC’s Latino community. One out of every five OKC residents is Latino, and this place will celebrate and honor their contributions, heritage and culture, while inviting all residents to share in these wonderful traditions.”
Fiestas de las Américas
The ribbon-cutting ceremony also marks the beginning of the 20th anniversary celebration of Fiestas de las Américas, historic Capitol Hill’s signature celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 27.
SW 25th Street will transform into a vibrant cultural corridor with the grand Parade of the Americas, featuring nearly 100 entries from schools, community groups and local leaders. Visitors can enjoy food trucks, artisan markets, an artist exhibition, a children’s zone, live music and dance performances by several local artists.
