Oklahoma City Line Maintenance is continuing to make progress toward repairing a 36-inch water main that broke yesterday morning near Pennsylvania Avenue and NW 6th Street.
Customers located in the surrounding area may experience lower-than-normal water pressure as the repair work is underway.
For safety purposes and impacts from flooding, several sections of road near the main break location are closed until further notice. Impacted areas include:
- Main Street between Virginia and Pennsylvania Avenues. (eastbound lane closed).
- Northwest 10th Street between Barnes and Villa Avenues (open one way both directions).
- Pennsylvania Avenue between Main Street and Northwest 7th Street (all lanes closed in both directions).
Due to several factors, the timeframe for repair is taking longer than anticipated. These include the location of the main in the oldest part of our water distribution system, the accuracy of records due to the main’s age, and the size of the main, which requires specialty equipment to make necessary repairs.
Specialized equipment is en route and anticipated to arrive late this afternoon.
Crews will continue to work around the clock until the repair is complete. Due to the timing of equipment arriving, crews will work through the early-morning hours of Wednesday, Sept. 11. However, because of the nature of this break, there is no estimate on when the repair will be complete or when area water pressures will resume normal flow. There is also no known cause for the break.
The City of Oklahoma City maintains more than 4,000 miles of water mains within a city that spans 621 square miles.
