OKC wants to remind you to prepare for flooding before it happens

Published on May 08, 2026

In Oklahoma, May isn't just about spring flowers and severe weather - it's historically brought the highest number of flooding disasters. That's why it's recognized as Flood Awareness Month.

Prepare for flooding before it happens:

  • Pay attention to local weather.
  • Be aware of flood-prone roadways.
  • Know the fastest way to high ground.
  • Stay away from flood waters.
  • Do not drive through flooded roadways - Turn around. Don't drown.
  • Check if your house is in a floodplain – FEMA floodplain maps.
  • Purchase flood insurance – discounts may be available because the City participates in both the National Flood Insurance Program (map) and the Community Rating System. Contact your insurance agent or visit floodsmart.gov for more information.

For additional flood information, flood zone maps or flood-related materials, contact the Public Works Drainage Division at 405-297-2581.
