Oklahoma City has officially opened the city's first double roundabout, aka “The Peanut,” marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation network and commitment to safer, more efficient roadways. The innovative intersection transforms the junction of three arterial roadways - NW 10th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and Virginia Avenue - into the city’s first double roundabout.
The unique design helps slow vehicle speeds, decrease the number of conflict points found at traditional signalized intersections and create a safer, more efficient experience for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Compared to conventional intersections, roundabouts can reduce serious and fatal crashes by encouraging lower travel speeds and reducing the likelihood of high-speed, right-angle collisions. The double roundabout also helps improve traffic flow by allowing continuous movement through the intersection, reducing delays and vehicle idling.
Drivers approaching the new intersection should:
Slow down as they approach the roundabouts.
Yield to traffic already circulating.
Choose the appropriate lane before entering and follow pavement markings.
Do not stop once inside the roundabout unless necessary to avoid a collision.
Use turn signals when exiting.
The project is part of Oklahoma City's ongoing investment in modern transportation infrastructure that supports growth, improves mobility and enhances public safety.
City officials encourage residents to familiarize themselves with how to navigate the new intersection and to exercise patience as drivers become accustomed to the new traffic pattern.
