NW Expressway overnight closures scheduled for May Avenue bridge work

Published on June 18, 2026

The City of Oklahoma City is alerting motorists that starting at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 21, westbound traffic on Northwest Expressway will temporarily close.

The closures are required to allow crews to safely begin bridge demolition and removal as part of the ongoing May Avenue bridge replacement project. Drivers who frequent this corridor should plan for the following overnight closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night:

  • Sunday, June 21 & Monday, June 22: Westbound NW Expressway will temporarily close to all traffic.
  • Tuesday, June 23 & Wednesday, June 24: Eastbound NW Expressway will temporarily close to all traffic.

In addition to the NW Expressway closures, May Avenue traffic at NW Expressway will be diverted to the temporary asphalt detour starting June 18. Traffic at May Avenue and NW Expressway will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal during the remainder of the construction, which is scheduled to last for two years.

Motorists should expect delays during these times.

Project overview

The extensive, two-year $15 million project involves the complete removal of the existing May Avenue bridge to make way for a diverging diamond interchange. This redesign is engineered to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and increase overall mobility through one of the city's busiest corridors. In addition to the new bridge structure, the project will update ramps, modernize traffic signals, improve street lighting and provide aesthetic enhancements.

The project is funded through a collaborative partnership that includes an Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) grant, the City's 2017 Better Streets, Safer City bond program and Street Development Fees.
