Fireworks still prohibited in Oklahoma City limits

Published on June 04, 2026

The City of Oklahoma City is advising residents that fireworks are still banned inside city limits, even after the passage of the Rockets' Red Glare Act.

The act, which was signed by Governor Stitt in May, applies only to private property in unincorporated areas of the state and gives cities the authority to regulate fireworks within their city limits.

The firework ban in OKC includes sparklers, snakes, bottle rockets and all other consumer-grade fireworks. The prohibition applies to all private and public property inside city limits, including parks, lakes and areas along the Oklahoma River.

"Fireworks are a serious safety hazard to people and property and should be left to professional shows," Fire Chief Richard Kelley said.

The firework ban has been in place since 1912.

Go to okc.gov/doiliveinokc to see if you live inside Oklahoma City limits. Many residents are surprised to learn they live in Oklahoma City because their home is in a different school district or their mailing address lists another nearby city. For example, someone may live in Oklahoma City, have children in the Deer Creek School District and be assigned an Edmond mailing address.

How to report fireworks; don't call 911

To keep 911 lines open for life-threatening emergencies, the City of Oklahoma City asks residents not to call 911 to report illegal fireworks. Residents should call 911 only if someone is injured by a firework or if fireworks start a fire.

If residents know the address where fireworks are being set off, they can report the violation in one of the following ways:

  • Fireworks Hotline: 405-297-2222, available June 27–July 6
  • Email: action.center@okc.gov
  • Text: 405-252-1053

The City will follow up on all complaints.

"Complaints about fireworks overload 911 phone lines and can keep people experiencing an emergency from quickly connecting with a dispatcher," Chief Kelley said.

Violations of the City's fireworks ordinances may result in a $500 fine, confiscation of fireworks and a possible jail sentence.
