The City of Oklahoma City will open a temporary daytime warming center in Red Andrews Municipal Gym from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 through Friday, Feb. 19 to help people escape the artic temperatures forecasted in Oklahoma City. The gym is located at 720 NW 8.
Employees from the Parks and Recreation Department will staff the center and the American Red Cross of Oklahoma will provide coffee, water and snacks.
“Well over one thousand people are homelessness in Oklahoma City on any given day,” said the City’s homeless program planner Jerod Shadid. “We need to offer safe, socially distanced places for people to take refuge from the cold.”
The day shelter at Homeless Alliance, 1729 NW 3 will open from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. to people experiencing homelessness.
Those needing shelter overnight can go to Willard Winter Shelter, 1400 NW 3. Hours are 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. Nobody will be turned away. If the shelter reaches capacity, guests will be transported to another location that will provide backup capacity.
The following organizations provide overnight sheltering but are currently at or near capacity: Salvation Army, City Rescue Mission, Jesus House, Grace Rescue Mission, Sisu Youth and Pivot.
