Final plans approved for first MAPS 4 Youth Center in Woodson Park

The Oklahoma City Council approved final plans for the first MAPS 4 Youth Center, located at Woodson Park, 3403 S. May Ave. The new 48,370-square-foot building will be operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County. The $18.7-million project includes $13.7 million from MAPS 4 and $5 million from the OKC 2025 Bond.

“The youth center at Woodson Park is designed to be a hub for learning and social opportunities for children and teens in our community,” MAPS Program Manager David Todd said. “Every detail of this facility has been carefully planned to support the diverse needs of nearby families, and we are looking forward to starting construction this fall.”

The youth center, designed by Bockus Payne Associates, will feature a welcoming main lobby, gymnasium with two basketball courts, learning centers, classrooms, youth lounges, a kitchen and dining hall, teaching kitchens, a flex space for workforce development and community events, and studios for performing arts.

MAPS 4 includes $118 million to build at least four new youth centers, including an operating and maintenance fund of $30 million and $10 million for future capital improvements. Each center will provide after-school and summer programming for youth throughout Oklahoma City. The Youth Centers are designed to offer new learning and social opportunities for children of all ages while providing meaningful support and intervention for those in need. The centers will be strategically located across the city to serve a broad population.

Construction is set to begin this fall. Future MAPS 4 youth centers will be built at the following sites:

6440 S. Santa Fe Ave.
Northeast Boys & Girls Club, 1501 NE 36th St.
Melrose Park, 7800 Melrose Lane

About MAPS 4

MAPS 4 is a debt-free public improvement program funded by a temporary penny sales tax that will raise a projected $1.07 billion over eight years. Oklahoma City voters approved the sales tax to fund MAPS 4 in a special election on Dec. 10, 2019, moving forward with a unique and ambitious plan to transform our community. The temporary penny sales tax funding MAPS 4 began April 1, 2020, and ends in 2028. More than 70 percent of MAPS 4 funding is dedicated to neighborhood and human needs. The rest is for quality of life and job-creating initiatives. The MAPS 4 Citizens Advisory Board and its six subcommittees will guide MAPS 4 planning and implementation, making recommendations to the City Council. The Council has final authority on MAPS 4. The MAPS Investment and Operating Trust developed a strategic investment plan to support long-term sustainable funding for MAPS 4 projects' operational expenses and maintenance.
