Can you help these dogs? OKC Animal Welfare is at critical capacity

Published on December 21, 2023

Due to our current capacity crisis, Oklahoma City Animal Welfare is waiving adoption fees for dogs over 40 lbs.

As of Dec. 20, 438 dogs call the Shelter home, putting the building at 147% capacity. More than 100 Shelter dogs are ready for adoption. All the dogs on this list are considered an urgent need.

“We value transparency here at OKC Animal Welfare,” OKC Animal Welfare Superintendent Jon Gary said. “We need our community's help. If we are unable to decrease our capacity this weekend, we will face tough decisions after the holiday. Please, take a chance, and come meet these dogs.”

Remember, every dog who leaves the Shelter helps relieve space, stress and disease concerns.

All adoptable dogs and cats at OKC Animal Welfare are up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, treated for worms and spayed or neutered. The Shelter is open for adoptions from noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, except City holidays.

Hounds for the Holidays and Feline Navidad adoption event

The Shelter will have pet pictures with Santa this Saturday. The community is invited to get all the pets in the Shelter’s care in a home for the holidays. Through Dec. 23, adoption fees for dogs under 40lbs, puppies and kittens are reduced to $30, and adoption fees for adult cats six months and older are waived.

Holiday sleepover

The Shelter also offers a flash fostering option, where families can bring an adoptable dog home for a holiday sleepover. This is a great option for people who want to help but aren’t ready for long-term pet commitment. Visit the front desk of OKC Animal Shelter, 2811 SE 29th St., pick any dog with a blue card and check them out of the Shelter for a few days. This flash foster option helps these dogs get adopted because people share photos and additional information about their foster pets.
