Access to duck hunting blinds improved at Lake Draper and Stinchcomb

Oklahoma’s waterfowl season opens Nov.1, and a change to Oklahoma City’s ordinance will allow more hunters to access City land. The Oklahoma City Council voted in September to update the ordinance to allow for daily rentals.

Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation rents 48 blind locations at Lake Stanley Draper and 23 in Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge.

“We are excited about this new process,” said John Rayfield, the OKC Parks fisheries biologist who also runs the City hunting program. “Changing from season-long allotment to daily rentals will give more hunters the opportunity to enjoy our public lands.”

Hunting blind locations can be rented for up to seven days in advance for $5 per day. Reservations are limited to one location per person per day. Hunters may set up temporary blinds at their rental locations, but the materials must be removed each day. Rental details and rules are available at okc.gov/hunting.

Hunters who wish to reserve their sites must take the following steps:

  1. Purchase an Oklahoma state hunting license.
  2. Purchase an Oklahoma City waterfowl shooting permit. Permits are $5 per day or $20 per year. Permits are not required for hunters younger than 16 if accompanied by an adult with a valid City waterfowl shooting permit.
  3. Purchase an Oklahoma City boating permit if hunting from a boat. Permits are $6.25 per day or $33 per year.
  4. Reserve a designated blind location through OKC Parks. Reservations are open seven days in advance and are $5 per day. Each hunter can only rent one location per day.

The City of Oklahoma City allows regulated hunting of ducks, mergansers and geese during the waterfowl season. The hunting season dates are set by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

In previous years, locations were allotted for the season through a drawing.
