Denae Smith
Artist Bio
Denae Smith is an African American artist from Oklahoma City. Her medium choice is acrylic mixed media works include realistic and abstract elements that draw from culture and influence my life. Using textural elements to show the dynamic flow from 2-D to 3-D demonstrating cohesiveness between the two realms. She is constantly looking for ways to improve my knowledge and skills to grow to her potential as an artist. Her paintings demonstrate how she is evolving as an individual through African American culture and phases of my life. Through Incorporating her background in health sciences and nursing, I look to the human body for a lot of my work for it resembles endless possibilities and culture that evoke what art means to her.

Description: While making this mural I wanted to make something that not only was inspiring but showed the evolution and weight of the black artist. The face of this mural is comprised of black artist and activist who have impacted me along with countless others; Nate Lewis, Bisa Butler, Jeff Donaldson, Maya Angelou, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, and James Baldwin. When I think about this artist I think of the generational influence and expansion of the black arts.
