Artist Bio
I have been an artist since my youth. This led me to become a visual designer throughout my professional career. I had the opportunity to become an educator in design and taught at Murray State College in Tishomingo. It was during my time here that I gained a more personal exposure to my heritage as a Chickasaw. We always honored it in my parent’s household but growing up in Oklahoma City offered limited exposure to Native American culture. My move to Tishomingo also opened up many memories for my father, a boarding school survivor. His frequent visits taught me a lot about our once-large Chickasaw family, particularly my grandmother who I sadly never got to know. When I returned to Oklahoma City I brought back that connection with me from my time at Tishomingo. I started painting again and my first pieces were donations for Indian clinic fundraisers. I began educating myself and trying to fill in gaps in my knowledge. From the beginning, I have been most interested in tribal dance, historic events, and storytelling for their meaning, color, and sense of movement. Over the past decade, I found my artistic interest moving from pan-native to specifically Chickasaw. This feels like coming home for me and is giving me the opportunity to create the work I am most proud of. My goal is to continue this growth and contribute my talents to Chickasaw art in Oklahoma.
