The Special Events Unit -- one lieutenant and two sergeants -- is is responsible for handling special events, dignitary protection and V.I.P escorts. The Special Events Unit serves as the primary liaison between the Police Department and event organizers. Depending on the size and location of a special event, a couple of officers or hundreds of officers may be needed to help monitor the special event while keep the City moving and making sure everyone safely has a good time.
The Special Events Unit coordinates the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, Independence Day celebrations, Opening Night, parades, fun runs, festivals, civic celebrations and more. The unit reviews all City permits for functions involving a City street. The unit has final authority to decide times, routes and roads to be closed.
The Special Events Unit's goal is to maintain public safety and security for everyone involved in special events.
