Butler named as Oklahoma City Planning Director

Post Date:09/09/2019 8:15 AM

Oklahoma City Manager Craig Freeman announced the selection of Geoffrey Butler as the next Planning Director.

Butler will oversee the Planning Department and report to Aubrey McDermid, one of Oklahoma City’s three Assistant City Managers. His official starting date was Sept. 6.

“We’ve filled a lot of important positions recently, and we’ve benefited from a strong applicant pool of qualified professionals each time,” said Freeman. “Geoff has been a valuable member of our team for a long time, earning a reputation for being fair, inclusive and respectful. His dedication, passion and commitment will be assets in his new leadership role for the City”

Butler succeeds McDermid, whom Freeman promoted earlier this year.

“I’m grateful and honored to have earned the trust of our leadership and my colleagues in the Planning Department,” said Butler. “It’s an exciting time to live and work in Oklahoma City. I’m eager to meet this new challenge and help shape our community’s future with the help of my exceptional colleagues, our partners and the people in our community.”

Butler will oversee 47 employees across the Planning Department’s four divisions.

About Butler

Butler, 44, was named Assistant Planning Director in 2016. He has served as interim Planning Director since McDermid’s promotion in May.

He started his career with the City in 2009 as a Senior Planner, earning promotions to Program Planner and Assistant Planning Director. He worked previously for an economic and planning consulting firm in Salt Lake City.

Through the years with the City of Oklahoma City, Butler helped develop and implement planokc (the City’s award-winning comprehensive plan). He also implemented other key initiatives like transportation infrastructure planning, development impact fees, updates to City zoning code and more.

Butler is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners. He earned a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and a master’s degree in business administration, both from the University of Utah.

Butler has been married for 21 years to his wife, Amber. They have four children: Nathan, Sarah, Avery and Katelyn.
