Workshop for Oklahoma City homeowners, tenants and landlords focuses on assistance, legal issues

Whether you’re a landlord or tenant learning about rights, looking to buy a house or trying to improve your current home, you can learn to make the most of your situation by attending a housing and legal workshop series in Oklahoma City.

The City of Oklahoma City’s Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI) and the Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma are partnering to organize the series, which covers a variety of topics for homeowners, prospective homeowners and tenants.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our nonprofit legal partners, get questions answered and see if you’re eligible to receive legal assistance, all at no cost to you,” said Shannon Entz, SNI’s Program Planner.

Two workshops are planned:

Part 1: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 (OCCC Capitol Hill Center, 325 SW 25th Street)

  • Fair housing and housing discrimination
  • Landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities
  • Common legal issues (probates, titles, deeds)
  • Homeowner and renter insurance
  • Programs offered by nonprofit partners

Part 2: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 6 (Will Rogers Gardens Exhibition Center, 3400 NW 36th Street)

  • Down-payment assistance
  • Predatory lending and leases
  • Purchase contracts
  • New construction of affordable homes
  • Home repairs and rehabilitation
  • Programs offered by nonprofit partners

The workshops can help residents learn about more tools to stabilize their neighborhoods. SNI has worked in targeted neighborhoods across Oklahoma City, helping to increase opportunities for homeownership and ensure safe and affordable housing for renters.

The effort coincides with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department’s Fair Housing Month in April. Local partners include Metro Fair Housing, Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City University School of Law.
