Public meeting Dec. 18 in NE OKC on next MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Center
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the auditorium on Langston’s Oklahoma City campus, 6700 N Martin Luther King Ave.
Construction is scheduled to begin next year on the senior center, which will be the third of four included in MAPS 3. The center will be located near NE 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Avenue with Langston as the operator.
Ward 7 Councilwoman Nikki Nice and staff from the City, Langston and Hornbeek Blatt will begin the meeting with a presentation, followed by a Q&A where residents can ask questions and meet with staff for feedback and input.
The MAPS 3 Senior Health & Wellness Centers provide fitness, health and social amenities and services to local residents age 50 and up. MAPS 3 funded the buildings, and the City contracts with an operator to manage membership and day-to-day operations.
Each center is designed to fit the specific needs of senior residents nearest to their locations, although they all offer broad benefits to any senior looking to stay active and engaged. They’re designed to be easily accessible for older adults, with gently-sloping ramps, curb-less parking lots and more.
The first center opened in 2017 at 11501 N Rockwell Ave. and is operated by Healthy Living and Fitness. The second center, the Pete White Health & Wellness Center at 4021 S Walker Ave., opened in May and is operated by NorthCare.
A fourth center will follow the first three, with a location and operating partner not yet determined.
