Council approves expansion for first MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Center
The center, which opened in 2017 and is operated by Healthy Living and Fitness at 11501 N Rockwell Ave., has far exceeded its goals with more than 5,600 members so far. The center has about 620 visitors on an average day.
The additional funding will pay to buy up to five acres of land adjacent to the property for an expanded parking lot and an extra gym with locker rooms for pickleball and other activities. It will also expand the existing locker rooms, add flexible spaces for activities and classes, add outdoor recreation space and more. Healthy Living and Fitness also plans to install a second pool with private funding.
“The expansion is going to help the senior center stay successful,” said MAPS 3 Program Manager David Todd. “Membership has already grown much faster than anyone expected, and we’re fortunate to have funding available to provide more room and more amenities. It’s a great fit for the community.”
MAPS 3 includes funding for at least three other Senior Health and Wellness Centers. The Pete White Wellness Center opened earlier this year at 4-21 S Walker Ave. and is operated by NorthCare. A third center is being designed, and will be operated by Langston University near NE 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Avenue. A fourth center is scheduled to be finished in 2021 with an operating partner and location not yet decided.
The additional funding for the first center comes from the estimated $31 million in extra sales tax and interest available for MAPS 3 projects. A strong economy throughout most of the 7 ½-year collection period for MAPS 3’s temporary penny sales tax created the extra funding.
