Martin Park to host business-focused environmental talks downtown in February

Post Date:01/31/2018 12:15 PM

Martin Park Nature Center is hosting a free series of lunchtime talks in downtown Oklahoma City to engage environmentally minded business professionals.

The talks are set for 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays in February at the EMBARK Conference Room on the ground floor of the Arts District Parking Garage, 431 W Main Street, Suite B. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch.

Dates and topics are:

  • Feb. 1, Oklahoma Conservation Leadership Academy (OCLA) with the Nature Conservancy. Cody Pepper, the Nature Conservancy’s associate director, will lead a discussion about the year-long experience of participating in the OCLA. Each year, 40 people representing a diverse mix of Oklahoma stakeholders participate to learn about conservation practices around the state. Learn to apply innovative and environmentally sustainable approaches within your own community, home or workplace. OCLA’s goal is to inspire innovation, cultivate meaningful and lasting relationships and provide resources and support for leading the way in nature-based solutions to the challenges facing our communities.
  • Feb. 8, The Influence of Oklahoma City Glass Buildings on Bird Migration. Nathan Kuhnert will explain how buiding design in downtown Oklahoma City may be affecting migratory birds. Kuhnert has been collaborating with Christine Sheppard of the American Bird Conservancy and other well-known ornithologists to study and record information on bird collisions with downtown OKC buildings. Kuhnert will share his insights and some resonable steps building owners can take to help birds.
  • Feb. 15, Storm What?! ... A Business’ Guide to Storm Water. Rebecca Dallen with the City’s Storm Water Quality team will help attendees understand how businesses depend on our community’s clean water, and have a stake in keeping it clean. Dallen will explain what storm water is, the Clean Water Act’s mission statement, types of storm water pollution and how to prevent it, and rules for permitting in Oklahoma City.
  • Feb. 22, Waste Management’s Environmentally Inclusive Business Model. Greta Calver with Waste Management will share some of their practices, including how they help care for the environment at their landfills even after they are closed by providing valuable environmental resources to the communities. Example topics include wildlife habitat projects, trail networks and educational pavilions.
