Community meeting planned for F. D. Moon Academy on Sept. 19
Residents are invited to a community meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 to learn about planned renovations at F.D. Moon Academy. The meeting will be in the cafeteria at the school, 1901 NE 13th Street.
During the meeting, parents, teachers, students and community members can review the renovation’s preliminary design. Nearly $2.3 million in MAPS for Kids funds are allocated for the project. The project includes a new elevator, restroom renovations and fire sprinkler system. The school is designed to accommodate students in prekindergarten through sixth grade.
Established in 1963, the school is named after educator Frederick Douglass Moon. In 1940, Moon moved to Oklahoma City and became the Douglass High School principal. He continued in that position until 1961.
Considered the dean of education in the local black community, Moon was elected to the Oklahoma City Board of Education in 1972 and served as its first black president in 1974.
Call (405) 297-2578 at least 48 hours before the meeting if you plan to attend the meeting and need a sign language interpreter, language interpreter or disability assistance.
The meeting is being coordinated by Design Architects Plus and the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area Public Schools (OCMAPS) Trust. For more information, contact the MAPS Office at (405) 297-3461.
