Camal Pennington was elected to the Ward 7 seat of the Oklahoma City Council on April 1, 2025, and sworn in to his first term on April 29, 2025.
Councilman Pennington is a native of Northeast Oklahoma City with deep roots in the community. He attended Longfellow Elementary, Northeast Academy for Health Sciences and Engineering and graduated from Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
As the Executive Director of It's My Community Initiative (IMCI), Councilman Pennington currently leads efforts to empower families and strengthen our neighborhoods in Oklahoma City. Before his work at IMCI, he played pivotal roles in higher education as Director of Annual Giving and Director of Admissions at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
The values and spirit of Ward 7 have shaped Councilman Pennington. He has dedicated his life to serving others. His professional journey has taken him from Washington D.C. where he worked as a congressional aide for the United States House of Representatives focused on education, civil rights and criminal justice policy, to advocating for teachers' rights as an attorney for the Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers.
He is a member of the OKC Trails Advisory Committee, the Oklahoma City Zoo Trust and the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation. Councilman Pennington formally represented Ward 7 on the Oklahoma City Planning Commission.
He is the former President of the Harding Fine Arts Academy School Board and a founding board member of the Northeast Oklahoma City Renaissance. He graduated from Leadership Oklahoma City's LOYAL Class XII and the Youth Council class of 2004. Councilman Pennington is married to Torie Luster Pennington, President of the Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers. They have two daughters, Olivia and Ella.
