Mulching saves your time, City landfill space Ever think about lawn mulching instead of mowing? You’ll spend less time doing yard work, save money on lawn supplies and send fewer bags to the landfill. Plus, your lawn will love it! Clippings contain nutrients and fertilizers, which you buy and apply. Mulching returns them to the soil where they belong – not in the lawn bag and landfill. You can begin mulching by removing the grass catcher from your mower or replacing its blade with a mulching kit. Or buy a mulching mower that is designed to cut and re-cut the grass into small pieces then blow them back into the lawn. Overgrown grass, over fertilization and over watering are the main causes of excess thatch, not mulching. Mow frequently and keep the lawn at a proper height – about two inches, cutting it at three inches. Good rule of green thumb: cut no more than one-third of the growth.
