Public Safety ARRP

Public Safety

Public safety projects are designed to meet Federal goals by minimizing and avoiding reductions in essential services provided by Police Officers.  Recovery funds will be used for sex-offender monitoring, combating gang-related violence, specialized traffic enforcement, and retaining seven police officer positions that were reduced in the FY 2011 budget process.  Funds allocated for co-recipients will be used to purchase new law-enforcement equipment. The City has been awarded a total of $4,371,202 for these projects.  $864,449 of this total Recovery money is being passed through the City to other municipalities in support of additional public safety programs, as listed below.

Retain Seven Police Officer positions for 12 months

This provides salary and benefits for seven police officer positions for 12 months.  These position were reduced in the Police Department’s FY 2011 General Fund budget. The Police Department has prioritized seven positions to retain through the use of the grant from the 22 scheduled reductions.

Retaining the positions in Drug Court, Derelict Vehicle, Fleet Management and Drug Interdiction (2 positions) allows the Police Department to continue the service levels in the units prior to the reductions.  The position reinstated to CALEA will allow the department to continue internal staff inspections and possibly future accreditation.  Springlake Division has been understaffed one field supervisor due to the temporary assignment of a lieutenant to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking program.  Eliminating the HIDTA program and retaining the lieutenant will allow the department to move the position back to field.
