The City of Oklahoma City recognized the need for oversight of an industry vital to the local economy as far back as 1930. The wild and wooly days of the first Oklahoma City boom brought to the forefront the need for certain controls upon the oil and gas drilling industry.

Through the years the City has strived to promote the industry while protecting the public. As a result, the City has an entire chapter of the Municipal Code devoted to oil and gas matters. A full time staff is present to administer the requirements of the ordinance.

The Oil and Gas Inspectors are charged with the duty to enforce the provisions of the Ordinance. The Ordinance is designed to provide the guidelines for operations within an urban area for the oil and gas producer. Many of the rules parallel those of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC). In some instances, the City requirements are more stringent than those of the OCC. All rules promulgated by the City as to oil and gas are intended to protect the health and safety of the general public and, at the same time, not discourage the outlook of the multitude of small companies who own and operate oil and gas wells within the City.

Within this site you will find the forms used by the City Oil and Gas Inspector for drilling permits, plugging permits, and injection well conversion permits. The complete Oil and Gas Ordinance is contained here as well as the Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust Rules for drilling operations near the municipal water supply reservoirs. We have included some maps of the area and access to the well records which show the location and status of all the wells in Oklahoma City.
