Applying for the Permit

 City of Oklahoma City

Credentials are not required to apply for a commercial building permit. The State of Oklahoma does not require a license for general contractors. Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, sign, driveway and fire suppression system permits, however, can only be issued to contractors licensed in the State of Oklahoma and registered with the City of Oklahoma City.

• TIP - Call for a "Commercial Checklist" as soon as you decide on your project. This list is your guide to organizing and preparing your application and plans so we can approve them the first time. Submitting all items on the checklist is the key to quicker review and permit issuance.

Getting a building permit starts with completing and submitting a permit application along with three complete sets of project plans and your legal description.

• TIP - Prepare proper plans for your project. This doesn’t mean you have to hire an architect for every project, but plans must be clear. Development Center staff can advise you when an architect is required. The degree of detail required depends on the project. Refer to your "Commercial Checklist" or discuss with Development Center staff.

• TIP - Have the submittal fee ready when you apply for a permit. (Submittal fee is nonrefundable.) Building permits are paid in two installments. The first payment, the submittal fee, is 50% of the total permit fee with a maximum of $2750.
