What is Adopt A City Street?

Oklahoma City’s Adopt A City Street Program was approved at City Council May 12, 1998. The City Manager has been encouraging city staff to create programs to enhance our city’s physical appearance as well as quality of life. It is felt that this program will meet these goals.
The Adopt A City Street Program will be a catalyst to organize active community participation in keeping the City beautiful. This program is a partnership between the City of Oklahoma City and its citizens. This program will build civic pride by beautifying Oklahoma City streets, increasing safety and decreasing litter and other pollutants through trash removal and other volunteer beautification efforts. Through the removal of hazardous material along the roadside, this program will reduce pollutants going into our streams, rivers and lakes, thus aiding our environment. Ultimately, this program will create a greater environmental awareness by the Oklahoma City community.

What are the organization’s commitments?

We ask volunteers to adopt at least one mile of City street and pick up trash along that mile at least four times per year for a minimum of two years. We also encourage adopters to further improve their community by taking part in such activities as planting trees and flowers, cover graffiti and place decals on city street storm drains.

What are the City of Oklahoma City’s commitments?

The City provides volunteers with a generous supply of trash bags, reflective vests, traffic barrels and will perform a required Safety Training Meeting. The City will also give the organization a certificate suitable for framing and erect special Adopt A City Street recognition street signs along the mile your organization has adopted. These signs will remain in place as long as the organization performs the cleanup requirements. Other special recognition will be through local newspapers, television and radio spots, the Adopt A City Street Program’s home page, and other various promotions that might come up.

How do we go about adopting a street?

Call the Adopt A City Street Program Coordinator at 297-2581 for an INFORMATION PACKET to be faxed or mailed to you If your organization decides to adopt a street, select a representative as liaison to the Program Coordinator . Select your top three choices of streets that your group would like to adopt Complete and return the Agreement, Contract and Schedule your Safety Training Meeting.

What if I can only commit to less than the required length of street and/or time specifications?

We encourage you to help clean the streets in any way you can. We will still provide the trash bags. Feel free to speak with the Adopt A City Street Program Coordinator about specific situations concerning cleanups in your neighborhood.

How do we dispose of the trash our organization picks up?

One of the goals of this program is to do as much as possible on your own. If you can contact a nearby business with a large dumpster that would be willing to absorb the extra trash that would be GREAT! Or...The City can dispose of filled trash bags for FREE! To schedule a pickup, you must call us at 297-2581 to discuss when and where the bags are located, as well as if your crew found any large items or hazardous material that would need our special attention. Don’t forget to RECYCLE your plastics, aluminum and paper!

How can I find out if there is an Adopt A City Street in my neighborhood?

Check out our website of PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS. The streets that have been adopted are listed with each organization. Or you can call or email the Program Coordinator and the latest information can be given to you.

Can our organization do more than just pick up trash?

SURE !!! Through the Parks Department’s approval, citizens can possibly plant trees, shrubbery or flowers along streets, improve bus stops, remove graffiti and do other beautification projects. Contact the Program Coordinator and we would be happy to assist you with these projects.

What streets are being adopted?

Initially, The City would like to concentrate on the main arterial streets of Oklahoma City such as May Avenue, S.W. 74th Street, Sunnylane or N.W. 63rd Street. Depending on your group, secondary streets can be considered to where you want to concentrate.
