Spills typically result from truck & auto accidents, or construction equipment malfunction. |
This program targets illegal or illicit discharges to the storm sewer system
and spills of hazardous and non-hazardous materials which might be a threat
to water quality within the city limits and within the city's watersheds.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department (OCFD) HAZMAT Unit is responsible for responding to hazardous material spills for protection of human health and safety. The HAZMAT Unit also responds to non-hazardous material releases that may be a threat to life, property, or the environment. The Storm Water Quality (SWQ) staff is HAZWOPER response trained to assist the Fire Department's HAZMAT Unit as Technical Support. Our goal is to prevent spills entering the storm drainage system. SWQ’S investigation of water quality related pollution complaints and hazardous material spills began in 1995 with Oklahoma City's first MS4 Permit. This division has since been given the responsibility of enforcing the Storm Water Discharge Ordinances of the City Code. Program staff is involved in working to increase community awareness of storm water environmental issues. This effort is expected to increase the number of reported spills and pollution problem (PHOTOS), thereby decreasing the amount of pollutants (i.e. spill residues) in the environment . |
