Storm Water Quality - Public Outreach

 Public Outreach

 City of Oklahoma City

The Storm Water Quality Public Outreach program includes a number of different elements reflecting the wide variety of water quality-related programs supported by the City.

Workshops are held regularly to promote Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce pollution runoff into the community waterways.  BMP workshops address construction projects, industrial businesses, and homeowners.  SWQ also provides school and volunteer programs including School Smart, Adopt-A-City-Street, Adopt-A-Creek and Curbs-to-Creeks.  In addition, SWQ actively participates in  environmental events such as EarthDay, Sciencefest, OKC Beautiful, Kids Camp and Garden Festivals.

The outreach program works with numerous groups on all projects including departments within the City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Community Foundation, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, OSU-OKC John E. Kirkpatrick Horticulture Center, OSU Extension, Natural Resources Conservation Services, Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Oklahoma Blue Thumb and Oklahoma County Conservation District.

For more information on these and other programs, contact our office at 297-1774.

Industrial & Construction Workshops

Industrial Workshops are held bi-annually for industrial facility owners and operators, to assist with permitting requirements and encourage BMP’s.

Construction Workshops are held bi-annually for construction contractors and businesses presenting BMP’s to help prevent sediment from leaving the work site.

School & Volunteer Programs
SchoolSmart is a comprehensive program targeted at schools and summer programs to educate Oklahoma City's youth about storm water protection.  Components include a mascot, yearly outdoor workshops, poster contests, demonstration displays and class programs.

There are volunteer programs for citizen participation: Adopt-A-City-Street and Curbs-to-Creeks.  Adopt-A-Street keeps our streets and creeks litter free.  Curbs-to-Creeks marks storm drains with messages to reduce improper disposal of pollutants into storm drains.  Additionally, volunteers at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events help other citizens safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals.

Environmental Events

In addition to workshops, school and volunteer
          programs,
SWQ actively participates in promoting
          environmental events. Booth displays educate
event attendees of storm water quality in
          Oklahoma City.

   Pesticide Training Program

Storm Water Quality Management's Pesticide Program
provides training to all city personnel who use, spray, store or
    manage pesticides.

The training addresses worker health and safety issues,
appropriate procedures for the type of pesticides being used and
how to reduce potential pollution to our surface and ground
    waters.

The classes also qualify for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for
    Applicator and Technician Licensure maintenance.
