Calling the Police

How do I report a crime?

Call 9-1-1 or come to a Police Station and report it in person.

What other times should I call 9-1-1?

Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies, where there's a threat to people's lives or safety.

What number should I call if I need the Police, but it's not an emergency?

Call 231-2121. That will connect you to Police Dispatch, but it won't tie up emergency lines.

Someone hit my car and didn't leave any information. What should I do?

Call 911 and an officer will be dispatched to investigate the incident.

Why does it sometimes take a long time for a Police Officer to get here when I call the Police?

All 9-1-1 calls receive a "priority rating." Emergency calls, reporting that people's lives are in danger, get the highest priority. If property only is involved, the call may be assigned a lower priority. If there are a large number of high-priority calls, it may take longer to respond to lower-priority calls.

Neighborhood Safety

Should I call the Police to report suspected criminal activity in my neighborhood?

Yes. Even if you're not sure anything illegal is going on, it's best to call. If there is criminal activity, the Police need to investigate as soon as possible.

What can the Police do about speeders in my neighborhood?

Call the Central Police Station at 405 297-1000 to report the problem. An officer will be assigned to work the area.

Can the police tow away abandoned or inoperative cars?

If a junk car is in the street, call the Action Center at 405 297-3535, or fill out an online service request. An officer will tag the car if it's in violation, and may have it towed. If the car is on private property, the property owner can sign a trespassing complaint to have the Police impound the car.

Police Officers

How can I get a police officer to speak at a Neighborhood Association meeting?

Call the Community Relations Unit at 405 297-1230.

Can people hire off-duty Police Officers?

Yes; call the Central Police Station at 405 297-1000 and ask for the Operations Bureau or call one of the Police Briefing Stations.

How do you make a complaint about a Police Officer?

Call the Police Department at 405 297-1000, or come to any Police Station or the City Manager's Office during regular business hours. All complaints are investigated.

How can I become a Police Officer?

The Police Department takes applications for Police Officer at different times throughout the year. Visit the recruitment page on this site or contact the Recruiting Office, 405 297-1116, for information.

How can I get a car out of impound?

Bring proof of ownership to the Central Police Station, 701 Colcord, and take care of any unpaid citations issued for the vehicle.

How can I get a copy of a Police Report?

Reports are available at the Records Bureau Counter, on the second floor of the Central Police Station. Some reports are available to citizens, while others are confidential and are not released to the public.

What documents and information should I keep in my car?

The only documents you would normally need are your driver's license and proof of insurance. You are not required to keep your vehicle registration. You should not keep personal documents or information that might be stolen and used fraudulently.
