Green Infrastructure Initiative
Planning

The Green Infrastructure Initiative is a series of initiatives that stemmed from the Green Infrastructure Taskforce.

The Taskforce was formed by the Planning Department and consisted of City staff and local professionals. The Taskforce created a variety of recommendations, from reviewing stormwater engineering standards to creating a public education program.

What is “Green Infrastructure?”

It’s a concept that highlights the importance of the natural environment in decisions about land use planning with an emphasis on the functions provided by a network of natural ecosystems that support long-term sustainability.

How is this concept implemented?

Through land use planning and development practices that employ "green" best management practices, such as  managing stormwater runoff at the local level through the use of natural systems, or engineered systems that mimic natural systems to treat polluted runoff.

Green Infrastructure Education Program

The Planning Department is coordinating a Green Infrastructure Education Program. The program will allow local professionals the opportunity to share their research and expertise about green infrastructure with citizens and professionals in Oklahoma City. Go to the education website for a list of speakers and topics in 2012 (http://www.okc.gov/planning/gii/education).

If you have questions concerning green infrastructure, email Aubrey Hammontree or call 297-1629.
