In the fall of 2006 Mayor Mick Cornett led 33 steering committee members and several ad hoc committees through a 13-month planning process for Core to Shore.
Members of the steering and project leadership committee include the Mayor and City Council, City Manager’s Office, Planning Commission, Downtown OKC, Inc., Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, City Department Directors, County and State of Oklahoma and area stakeholders including property owners, businesses, residents, local agencies, non-profit organizations and community-based organizations.
Two public meetings were also held in 2006 to gain citizen input.
Through his leadership, Mayor Cornett proposed a seven-year, nine-month one-cent sales tax known as MAPS 3 to kick off funding of significant projects outlined in the plan. In December 2009, the measure passed to support several projects including Core to Shore’s central park system, convention center and a modern rail-based transit system in downtown.
Through a blight resolution and urban renewal plan, the City is preparing to lead significant development in the coming decade.
