Qualified individuals who want to learn a new skill or seek summer employment as a lifeguard at one of the City's pools or family aquatic centers can sign up for annual lifeguard training courses through the City's Parks and Recreation Department.
American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course. Through a partnership with the American Red Cross, the City offers annual training for persons aged 15 and over who wish to become part of the City's summer lifeguard team. No prior lifeguarding experience is required to sign up for the training, but individuals must past pre-qualification testing.
Participants in the training course will learn the necessary skills of water rescue and emergency first aid, including:
- victim recognition techniques
- victim assessment
- water retrieval skills
- primary first aid
- advanced emergency care, including CPR and AED usage
Individuals who want to sign up for training must meet the following qualifications:
- be able to swim 300 yards continuously using only the front crawl and/or breaststrokes, while demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing;
- be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs;
- complete a timed swim, brick retrieval event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Age Requirements: Course candidates must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled class session. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age to work for the City of Oklahoma City.
Class cost: Classes cost $35 per session for those who qualify and are hired for summer 2013 employment by the City of Oklahoma City (required minimum work hours and other criteria must be met in order to get the discount). For those who do not work for the City, the course cost is $135.

Swim Instructor Course / Water Exercise Trainer
Learn all the skills necessary to teach any level of swim lesson,
swim team and water exercise. Students learn stroke proficiency,
development and techniques, in addition to physiology of water exercise.
Must be at least 16 years of age to qualify. Cost: $35

Refresher Course
This course will refresh skills learned in the American Red Cross
Lifeguarding course, allow for practice on CPR and expand on other necessary
skills. The refresher course is required for all returning or transferring
guards who already have current American Red Cross certification.
