October 6-17

(September 4, 2012) - Oklahomans aged 50 and older looking to get into the competitive spirit this fall can make their way to Oklahoma City for the 2012 Oklahoma Senior State Games.

The games will take place October 6-17. Over 400 competitors are expected to participate in the week-long event, co-sponsored by the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department and the Oklahoma Senior Games Association.

“We’re very pleased to again be able to host these athletes,” said Wendel Whisenhunt, Parks and Recreation director. “These seniors are a testament to the importance of fitness at every age, and embody the ‘can do’ spirit we all strive for.”

Men and women of all fitness levels can take part in a variety of athletic and non-athletic competitions, including archery, basketball, bowling, cycling, golf, tennis, racquetball, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field and weightlifting, among others.  Each event is categorized into specific age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+.  The top three age group finishers from each team or individual event will receive a gold, silver or bronze medal.

The events will take place at over 20 different venues throughout the Oklahoma City area, including several metro parks and schools.

In addition, seniors whose times meet the qualifying standards for national competition can advance to the National Senior Games in Cleveland in 2013.

Participants can register now through September 20.  Online registration will be extended through September 22.   The basic registration fee is $50 for mailed in entries and $45 for entries received online.  Additional site fees are required for bowling and golf. Registration includes entry in up to eight individual events, plus a ticket to the Games Gala.
