Town hall meeting to focus on improving Oklahomans' health

(January 27, 2012) - Residents are invited to learn how they can improve public health in Oklahoma by attending a free health fair and town hall meeting on Thursday, February 16 at the Marriott Hotel, 3233 NW Expressway.  The meeting is hosted by Ward 2 Councilman Ed Shadid.

The health fair begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include physical and mental health screenings and information.  The meeting, titled “Public Health Epidemics in Oklahoma,” starts at 7 p.m.  Both events are free and open to the public.  Registration is not required.

“Oklahoma is rapidly becoming the leader in epidemics such as obesity, drug and alcohol dependency and tobacco use,” Councilman Shadid said.  “Maintaining the status quo will result in tremendous personal, social and economic pain and is unsustainable.  It’s time to fight back.”

Meeting speakers include Oklahoma Department of Health commissioner Dr. Terry Cline; Oklahoma City County Health Department director Gary Cox; Oklahoma Policy Institute director Dr. David Blatt; Oklahoma County Commissioner Ray Vaughn, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse director Terry White and Councilman Dr. Ed Shadid.

“We need to continue the federal healthcare debate while simultaneously advocating for change on the state, local and personal level,” Shadid added.

Councilman Shadid represents Ward 2, which covers northwest Oklahoma City from approximately NW 122 to NW 23 and from approximately Meridian to Santa Fe.
