Historic Preservation lecture offered

(August 7, 2009) - Oklahoma City’s Planning Department will host a free lecture on the History of Historic Preservation at 4 p.m., August 10 in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 N Walker.

Tulsa Urban Planner and University of Oklahoma professor Kent Schell will present the lecture.  Schell will discuss historic preservation efforts through 200 years of American history.

Topics will include historic preservation as a movement using specific buildings, parks, and battlefields around the country as examples.  Schell will also talk about historic preservation around the world and the impact of trendy sustainability concepts on historic preservation efforts.

A discussion will follow the presentation.

“This will be a great opportunity to learn about the big picture of historic preservation and think about how Oklahoma City can benefit from the application of the best preservation practices through history,” Oklahoma City’s Historic Preservation Architect Catherine Montgomery said.

This is the second in a series of three lectures planned as a part of the Oklahoma City Planning Department’s Historic Preservation Commission Summer Lecture Series.
