Free youth fishing continues in OKC

(July 7, 2009) - The City’s free “Hooked on Fishing” youth fishing classes held at metro area lakes will continue through July and August.  The classes will be held on three Saturdays each month from 8 to 10:30 a.m.  Classes are free to all children ages 5-15.  Adult supervision is required, and all state and city license fees are waived during class time.  Citizens may register by calling the Police Athletic League at 316-FISH (3474).

Remaining class dates and locations are:

July 11 and August 8
Metro Tech Springlake, 1900 Springlake Drive

July 18 and August 15
Edwards Park Lake, 1515 N Bryant

July 25
Dolese Youth Park Pond, NW 50th & Meridian

August 22
Crystal Lake, SW 15 & MacArthur

Participants learn basic fishing skills, including knot tying, casting, fish identification and local fishing regulations. Classes are taught by the City’s fisheries biologist and instructors from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s Aquatic Resources Education Program.

 

The annual free fishing classes are part of the “Close to Home” Fishing Program, a cooperative partnership between the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
