Annual Gardening Festival set to bloom June 13

(June 1, 2009) - Local gardening enthusiasts will celebrate the bounty of summer with the 18th Annual “Garden Festival in the Park,” on Saturday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Will Rogers Park, 3400 NW 36th Street.  The festival, hosted by the Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, will feature a plant and garden sale, gardening seminars, an herb and flower show, kids’ activities, the Late Bloomers Café and more.  The show is being held in celebration of National Garden Week.  The festival is FREE and open to the public.

This year’s seminars include:

10 a.m.             “Plants Native to Oklahoma”
11 a.m.             “What’s Killing Our Trees?” – Oak, Elm, Maple
1 p.m.              “Attracting Butterflies”
2 p.m.              “New Plants on the Market”

In addition to the seminars, staff naturalists will conduct free hourly tours of the Will Rogers Horticulture Gardens throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m.

According to Will Rogers Park naturalist Louis Scott, the festival has something for everyone.  “Even if you don’t have a green thumb,” says Scott, “there are plenty of garden ornaments and craft booths throughout the event.  More importantly, the seminars will provide a great learning opportunity for gardeners of all levels and abilities.”

Will Rogers Park is located on the south side of NW 36th Street, between Portland Avenue and the I-44 frontage road.

For more information, call the Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center at (405) 943-0827 or visit online at www.okc.gov/parks.  The Will Rogers Garden and Garden Exhibition Center are maintained and operated by the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department.
