Martin Park offers creepy, creative family fun in October

(October 15, 2007) - Citizens looking for a frightening good time this month need look no further than Martin Park Nature Center. The Center is offering two special events, both with families in mind.

The fun starts October 21 when Martin Park presents “Creatures are Stirring” a myth-busting exploration of some of Halloween’s creepiest creatures. Park naturalists will lead visitors on a guided tour of Martin Park and discuss the hair-raising myths and folklore surrounding several of the Park’s animals and birds, including bats, owls, spiders and more. Costumes are welcome. The tour starts at 3:00 p.m. and reservations are required. Call 755-0676 to sign up.

Creatively minded folks are welcome to attend the inaugural “Fall Into Art” festival October 27. This all-day open house will bring local artists, artisans and photographers together to explore how nature inspires their work. The event will feature art exhibits and demonstrations, live music, kids activities, refreshments and more.

“Nature has played a vital role in the creative process almost since the beginning of human kind,” said Neil Garrison, naturalist for Martin Park Nature Center. “Some of our earliest knowledge of ancient cultures comes from the artistic artifacts left behind, many of which depict scenes of the natural world. ‘Fall Into Art’ will provide folks with an opportunity to explore their creative side by connecting to and being inspired by nature.”

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own sketchpads, cameras or journals to use while exploring the beautiful fall colors. “Fall Into Art” will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and reservations are not required.

The cost for both events is $2 per person.

Martin Park Nature Center is located at 5000 West Memorial Road, approximately ¼ mile east of MacArthur Blvd on the south side of the Kilpatrick Turnpike.  Martin Park is operated and maintained by Oklahoma City’s Parks and Recreation Department. The park is open free to the public Wednesday – Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except between Christmas and New Year’s. For more information call 755-0676.
