City warns residents not to release swimming pool water into storm drains

(September 6, 2007) - Swimming pool owners planning on draining their pool this fall should use proper procedures when discharging their chlorinated pool water.  It is against city code to drain swimming pool water into a street or storm drains.  Fines can range from $200 to $1,000 per violation.

“The best way to drain your pool and backwash your pool filtration unit is through a sanitary sewer line. since water that enters storm drains is not treated before it flows into a creek or stream.  This method is environmentally friendly and allows the chlorinated pool water to be treated before entering a creek or stream,” said Environmental Unit Supervisor Raymond Melton.

Where no sewer line is available, water should be de-chlorinated and tested before draining the pool.  Citizens are also encouraged toshould also remove any large debris that couldblock or clog the sewer linebefore discharging into their sanitary sewer line.

Remember that cChlorinated pool water and filter backwash materials are pollutants that can negatively impact fish and plants living in streams.
