OKC’S Tennis Center grand reopening recognized as Event of the Year

(December 4, 2006) – The May, 2006 Block Party celebrating the Grand Re-Opening of the Oklahoma City Tennis Center was granted the Oklahoma District Tennis Association’s Tennis Event of the Year Award at a Bricktown ceremony December 2.

The Block Party, held on May 4 of this year, kicked-off the re-opening of the City’s Tennis Center after a $1.8 million facelift. Mayor Mick Cornett hosted the event, which featured a ceremonial ribbon cutting, skills test, tennis exhibition, equipment demonstrations and free instruction. Former French Open Doubles Champion and ESPN commentator Luke Jensen was also on hand for the event, which attracted large crowds and regional media coverage.

"We appreciate receiving the Event of the Year Award from the Oklahoma District Tennis Association," said Mayor Mick Cornett. "A special thanks goes out to the United States Tennis Association, the directors of OKC Tennis Inc., local tennis pros and City staff for organizing such a fun and successful event. The renovations are truly something in which we can be proud."

“We’re excited and honored to receive this year’s award,” said Vikki Williams, the Tennis Center’s Pro. “The Block Party was a great way to bring tennis back to the City, and show off the new center, which has garnered rave reviews by the community.”

The Tennis Center, which opened in 1969, boasts 24 courts and is the largest facility in the state. The 2005-06 renovation included upgraded lighting, new seating structures, misting and shade areas, new park fencing and improved drainage. The project was chiefly funded by the 2000 General Obligation Bond. A $100,000 grant from the United States Tennis Association contributed to the project’s funding. The Center is operated and maintained by the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department.
