Skateboarding, skating are prohibited in Downtown area

(December 1, 2004) – Skateboarding and skating are prohibited Downtown by a City ordinance. The ordinance prohibits the use of skateboards, inline skates and traditional skates in an area roughly defined by the Shartel on the west, the Santa Fe railroad right-of-way on the east, NW 13 on the north and SW 2 on the south.

Skaters and skateboarders make walking inconvenient and risky, and skateboards often cause expensive damage to public property.

The ordinance applies to all public property as well as any private property marked with signs prohibiting skating and boarding.

Skaters and skateboarders can be arrested for violating the ordinance, and fined $167.

The City is building a new 'action park' on the Oklahoma River near downtown that will feature areas for skaters, boarders and bikers.
