Free Fishing Clinics Offered All Summer Long

(May 17, 2004) – Kids age 5-15 can learn skills that will help them fill their stringer full of fish this summer by registering for one of nine free fishing clinics offered through the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department.

Students will learn everything from the basics of knot tying and casting to fish identification and equipment from seasoned, aquatic education instructors.  Classes run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and are by reservation only.  Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Classes will be held at the following locations:

Fishing poles, tackle and bait will be provided. Participants 16 and older must have a City fishing permit and State fishing license.

The fishing classes are part of the “Close to Home” Fishing Program designed to educate new anglers and provide more fishing opportunities for anglers in Oklahoma City.  The clinics are a partnership between the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department and the Oklahoma City Police Department.

“The Parks Department has been offering free fishing classes for more than 20 years.  More than 600 children and 400 adults attend classes annually,” said Fisheries Biologist Bob Martin.

To register, call the HB Parsons Fish Hatchery at 755-4014.
